"Emotional Weather Report" was the first Tom Waits song that made me a fanatical fan. I heard it late one night on KUNM in Albuquerque not long after it was released. It's one of those songs I heard when right at the edge of sleep -- and woke up the next morning wondering if I dreamed it.
And being from New Mexico, I'd been a fan of Dr. George Fischbeck years before when he did the weather for an Albuquerque station.
So while I disagree with your initial view of the song, thanks for the other versions -- and for the Lous Armstrong song.
At the end of the 3rd version (Chicago, 1976), Waits gives a shout-out to Frank Vicari on tenor saxophone. Here's some info on Vicari: https://www.saxontheweb.net/threads/frank-vicari-passes.47437/
Thank you for this!
I love the way you do the leg work to regale us with the evolving live versions, and that Armstrong connection!
Interesting! This was the track that they played on WNEW-FM back in the day. I guess this and Eagles’ “Ol’ 55” were my introduction to his music 🎶 🤔

Bravo.
I had no idea that song had such a history and certainly never knew about the Louis Armstrong connection. Great post.
